Torrential monsoon rains continued to lash Mumbai and its surrounding suburbs for the third consecutive day, triggering widespread waterlogging, transport disruptions, and emergency response operations across the city. Civic authorities have deployed disaster management teams at vulnerable locations as heavy rainfall is expected to continue.
Over the past 48 hours, Mumbai has recorded exceptionally heavy rainfall. According to official figures, the city division received 300 mm of rain, while the eastern suburbs recorded 380 mm and the western suburbs registered 345 mm, making it one of the heaviest spells of the current monsoon season.
Strong winds reaching speeds of 70 to 80 km/h have further complicated the situation, leading to fallen trees, damaged infrastructure, and traffic disruptions in several areas.
BMC Activates Full Emergency Response
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has mobilized its entire civic machinery to tackle the ongoing weather emergency. Officials said disaster management teams are working around the clock to ensure public safety and restore normalcy.
The BMC’s Disaster Management Department is continuously monitoring rainfall, waterlogging, and emergency incidents throughout the city. Control rooms remain operational 24 hours a day to coordinate rapid response efforts.
Special Teams Deployed at Vulnerable Locations
To minimize the impact of the severe weather, special emergency teams have been stationed at flood-prone and high-risk areas across Mumbai.
These teams are equipped to respond immediately to incidents including:
- Tree collapses
- Short circuits
- Building collapses or partial cave-ins
- Flood-related emergencies
- Road blockages
Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and report emergencies immediately through official helplines.
Dewatering Operations Continue Across Mumbai
The BMC has deployed high-capacity dewatering pumps, suction machines, and additional manpower to clear waterlogged roads and restore traffic movement as quickly as possible.
Municipal workers continue clearing drains and monitoring low-lying areas where flooding remains a concern following continuous rainfall.
Officials said every effort is being made to reduce water accumulation and ensure essential services remain operational.
General Body Meeting Scheduled
A Special General Body Meeting of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has been scheduled for July 9, where civic officials are expected to review the city’s rain preparedness, emergency response, and the impact of the ongoing monsoon.
The meeting is likely to include discussions on infrastructure challenges, flood mitigation measures, and future preparedness plans.
With the India Meteorological Department continuing to forecast heavy rainfall, Mumbai remains on high alert as emergency teams stay deployed across the city to safeguard residents and manage any weather-related incidents.
